I have been following the development of Buddypress for some time now and it was recently acquired by Automattic (the company that runs Wordpress). I think this was a great move, the person who was working on BuddyPress has an opensource project and was building it on top of WPMU, each “blog” was a profile. I look forward to seeing where it goes from here and see if it competes in the loaded, roll your own social network field, including Ning, Elgg and others.
BuddyPress can be seen in action on the site Chickspeak. Which was created by the BuddyPress creator who is now working for Automattic.
