BuddyPress acquired by WordPress
I have been following the development of Buddypress for some time now and it was recently acquired by Automattic (the company that runs Wordpress). I think this was a great move, the person who was working on BuddyPress has an opensource project and was building it on top of WPMU, each “blog” was a profile. I look forward to seeing where it goes from here and see if it competes in the loaded, roll your own social network field, including Ning, Elgg and others.
BuddyPress can be seen in action on the site Chickspeak. Which was created by the BuddyPress creator who is now working for Automattic.

Matt - How much do you know about BuddyPress? At some point, might this compete with Ning?

Well, it was just one person coding it himself, but now with the support of Automattic, I would assume it will become pretty great, they usually dont just throw things out there. If you read more about it one of the good things they are stressing with their plan is to have it be an open / distributed network. Here is a good article on it. If I put faith in anyone it would be Wordpress.
