Powerpoint no more… pdf it is

pptslide.pngNow that I am starting to get some presenting experience under my belt I am starting to get into the flow of things.

I started out using Dom Slides which in simple terms are html slides. Here is an early version of my slides. Nice, clean, more fun than Powerpoint but not that usable for someone who wants to bring a copy of your slides with them.

At my last conference, I had so free time the night before so I start to play with my slides. This ends up becoming a very late night project the night before I present. Anyways, I remember some great slides decks that I had seen in pdf formats at SXSW. Such as Blue Flavor’s Mobile Web Presentation and How to bluff your way in Web 2.0.

So I start to think how can I make something like those. I start to play with Keynote and notice that I have a trial version and I didn’t want to shell out $80 for my office laptop. So then I start to play with Powerpoint, since it is late I can’t figure out how to create pdf slides (DUH). So hours later I have created Powerpoint slides. I realized I hate Powerpoint but to late for that now. So I present, (sidenote, Mac remote is very helpful for presenting) and then I am motivated to figure out these pdf slides. Well of course Adobe InDesign. So I created a template and create my slides. It will provide easy updating and produce nice pdf’s. Here are my new pdf slides.

I also created an indesign template that you can use if you feel so inclined. It includes:

  • Title slide
  • Section intro
  • Image slide
  • Text slide

Another cool tool to check out is SlideShare. It’s like youtube for presentations.

So end the use of boring clunky Powerpoint slides :)
